Calvià aims to exceed 70 kilos per inhabitant to consolidate itself as a leading municipality in glass recycling
The public company Calvià 2000 joins the challenge proposed by Ecovidrio to obtain the long-awaited Green Flag
Calvià has launched the glass recycling campaign for the coming months, a time of greater use and, therefore, a time to increase the results of previous years. In 2023, the collaboration of the public company Calvià 2000 and the municipality's hospitality industry boosted glass recycling to 70 kilos per inhabitant per year. Last year 3.700 tons of glass were collected. Looking ahead to 2024, the participation of a total of 475 restaurants, bars and beach bars in the area is expected, which have joined this initiative in collaboration with Calvià Town Hall and Ecovidrio.
The V edition of Ecovidrio's #MovimientoBanderasVerdes (#GreenFlag Movement) will also reward the two most responsible hospitality establishments committed to the sustainability of the Balearic Islands, evaluating their initiatives to improve waste recycling management, their energy and water consumption or their commitment to a sustainable purchase, amongst other variables.
Calvià has achieved very high participation values in previous campaigns, with the Balearic Islands average being 6.6 establishments out of every 10. The objective is to exceed the percentage and reach 7 out of every 10. To achieve this, a campaign is started in which it will distribute information material to establishments that will be expanded to social networks to also reach individual users. Calvià is one of the 21 municipalities in the Balearic Islands that are eligible to obtain the Green Flag.
Andrés Barceló, manager of Calvià 2000, has pointed out that the “path to sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism goes through recycling. The question is not so much about decreasing, but rather knowing how to improve and convert waste into a recyclable asset, in this case glass, which can enter an infinite reuse cycle.
Barceló maintains that, far from being a mere proposal, the possibility of human activity and environmental protection "is now a reality thanks to the commitment of employers and a first-class workforce, the workers of Calvià 2000 will once again demonstrate this year that "they are capable of giving their best".
